Specialist Haemoglobinopathy Team
We are the haemoglobinopathy coordinating centre (HCC) for the South West region for sickle cell disease. We are the specialist haemoglobinopathy team (SHT) for sickle cell disease, thalassaemia, and rare inherited anaemias.
The local adult patient population is about 150 sickle cell, 30 thalassaemia and 20 rare inherited anaemia patients; requiring 40-50 admissions per year, a weekly outpatient clinic, and multiple day ward and same day emergency unit (SDEC) attendances.
The outpatient department is located at the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) and consists of an acute unit which includes: an apheresis unit, acute medical service for sickle cell patients in crisis, outpatient clinics, transfusion service and phlebotomy (where blood tests are taken).
- The haemoglobinopathy outpatient department runs a clinic every Wednesday afternoon. Outpatient appointments are held either face to face, via telephone or video consultation.
- Local multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT) are held every Wednesday prior to the clinic.
- Regional multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT) are held each month on a Wednesday. of each month.
Where to have blood tests taken:
Blood tests need to be requested by the haemoglobinopathy team before they can be taken.
Once requested, bloods can be done at your GP surgery, at the clinic appointment, or separate blood test slots can be booked at the BHOC by the haemoglobinopathy team.
